Practical help for complicated operations.

From one stubborn spreadsheet to a reporting process that crosses several departments, the aim is the same: understand the problem properly, then build something reliable, usable and maintainable. Based in Loughton, Essex, working with organisations across Essex, London and the UK.

01 / Process improvement and automation

Stop doing the same work twice.

When routine work depends on copying, pasting, chasing files and hoping a macro still runs, there is almost always a better way.

The problem

  • Repetitive manual steps in daily, weekly or monthly routines
  • Fragile macros and spreadsheet chains that break without warning
  • Approvals and handovers managed by email
  • Key processes that depend on one person

What the work involves

  • Mapping the current process step by step
  • Removing steps that add no value before automating anything
  • Building workflows in Power Automate, SharePoint, Excel and VBA
  • Testing against real cases, including the exceptions

What you receive

  • A working, automated process
  • A before and after comparison of time and effort
  • Clear documentation of how it runs
  • Training for the people who use it

From previous work

At Eurostar, monthly certification of £91m of cross-border stock went from up to two days of manual work to two clicks and about three minutes.

  • Power Automate
  • SharePoint
  • Excel
  • VBA
  • Power Query
02 / Data transformation and quality

Fix the figures before building the dashboard.

A polished chart built on unreliable data is another problem, not a solution. The work starts with the source data and the rules that shape it.

The problem

  • Duplicate, inconsistent or missing records
  • Data held in several systems that never quite agree
  • Month-end reconciliation that takes days
  • Calculation logic nobody has checked in years

What the work involves

  • Profiling and reconciling the source data
  • Agreeing clear rules for how data is cleaned and combined
  • Building repeatable transformations in Power Query
  • Exception checks that surface problems early

What you receive

  • A single, reconciled dataset you can rely on
  • Documented business rules and data definitions
  • A repeatable refresh, not a one-off clean-up
  • Exception reporting for future data problems

From previous work

At Eurostar, reconciling new reporting against legacy outputs exposed decade-old data feeds, mismatched decimal formats and exchange-rate errors, with historical calculation defects confirmed by the original developer.

  • Power Query
  • Excel
  • Microsoft Access
  • SQL
  • SharePoint lists
  • System exports
03 / Reporting and business intelligence

Reports people actually use.

Good reporting answers the questions people need to act on, refreshes without manual effort and is clear about where every figure comes from.

The problem

  • Reports rebuilt by hand every period
  • Dashboards that look impressive but go unused
  • Different teams reporting different figures for the same thing
  • No early warning when something starts to go wrong

What the work involves

  • Agreeing the decisions the reporting must support
  • Designing data models and measures in Power BI
  • Automating refresh and distribution
  • Testing figures against trusted sources

What you receive

  • Power BI or Excel reporting that refreshes automatically
  • Clearly defined KPIs and measures
  • Documentation of sources and logic
  • A handover so your team can maintain and extend it

From previous work

At GSK, a rolling 24-month capacity forecast covering around 300 clinical studies informed monthly decisions on moving work between sites or to contract packagers.

  • Power BI
  • DAX
  • Power Query
  • SQL
  • Excel
  • SharePoint
04 / Supply chain and inventory systems

Better visibility of stock, orders and supply.

Inventory problems are rarely only about inventory. They usually trace back to forecasting, process design and the data feeding both.

The problem

  • Shortages found too late, or excess stock tying up cash
  • Forecasts built on guesswork or outdated spreadsheets
  • Slow or inconsistent receiving, picking and dispatch
  • Little insight into spend across suppliers
  • Stock records that drift further from reality between counts

What the work involves

  • Analysing stock, demand and lead time data
  • Building forecasting and replenishment models
  • Redesigning warehouse and Kanban workflows
  • Consolidating procurement and supplier data
  • Tracing stock discrepancies to their likely causes and locations

What you receive

  • Forecasting or stock models matched to how you operate
  • Clear status reporting for at-risk items
  • Redesigned processes with documented procedures
  • Spend visibility across suppliers and sites

From previous work

At GSK, a forecasting model covering about 2,000 packaging components cut red-status lines from 173 to single figures within six months.

  • Excel
  • VBA
  • Power BI
  • Power Query
  • Kanban
  • SAP
  • Microsoft Dynamics
  • RELEX
05 / Systems analysis and transformation

Make the whole process work.

Sometimes the technology is not the root cause. Processes, handovers, responsibilities and definitions all decide whether a system is useful.

The problem

  • New systems that have not delivered what was expected
  • Workarounds that have quietly become the real process
  • Unclear requirements for a planned change
  • Teams with different versions of how the work gets done

What the work involves

  • As-is and to-be process mapping
  • Requirements gathering and fit-gap analysis
  • User acceptance testing
  • Implementation support and training

What you receive

  • A clear, evidenced picture of how work currently flows
  • Requirements and process designs ready to implement
  • Hands-on support through implementation
  • Documented procedures and trained users

From previous work

For Rentokil Initial, mapped supply chain processes in Spain, Portugal, Poland and Germany against a group-wide Business Central design, documenting the local exceptions the rollout had to handle.

  • Process mapping
  • Requirements analysis
  • Fit-gap analysis
  • User acceptance testing
  • Business Central and Dynamics
  • SAP
06 / Small-business websites

A website that does its job.

For small businesses in Loughton, Epping Forest and across Essex and London that need a clear, dependable website: one that explains what you do, loads quickly and turns visitors into enquiries.

The problem

  • An outdated website, or none at all
  • Pages that are slow, hard to read on a phone or difficult to update
  • Enquiries that never arrive, or arrive without the details you need
  • A site you cannot update without paying someone

What the work involves

  • Agreeing who the website is for and what it must achieve
  • Writing and structuring clear, plain-English content
  • Designing and building fast, accessible pages

What you receive

  • A responsive website that works on any device
  • A simple, reliable way for customers to get in touch
  • Guidance on hosting, domains and keeping it up to date
  • Enquiry forms that deliver the details you need straight to your inbox or a spreadsheet

From previous work

This website, and an independent publishing platform with memberships and payments, were designed and built in-house.

  • Responsive design
  • Accessibility
  • Search engine basics
  • HTML, CSS and JavaScript
  • Eleventy
  • Netlify
  • Git and GitHub

Questions

Before you get in touch.

Do I need to know which technology I need?

No. Start with the problem: what is slow, unreliable or frustrating, and what it costs you. Choosing the right tool is part of the work, and often the answer is something you already have.

What happens after I get in touch?

I will reply to arrange a free 30-minute conversation about the problem. If it is a good fit, you receive a written proposal setting out the scope, timescales, deliverables and fee. Nothing starts until you have agreed it.

What does it cost?

The first conversation is free. After that, every piece of work is quoted individually: diagnostic reviews and defined projects at a fixed fee, contract and interim support at a day rate. You will always know the cost before any work begins.

Will we become dependent on you?

That is exactly what the work is designed to avoid. Solutions are built in tools you already use wherever possible, documented clearly, and handed over with training so your team can run and change them without me.

Do you work with our existing Microsoft 365 tools and ERP system?

Usually, yes. Most work uses Excel, Power Query, Power BI, Power Automate and SharePoint, which many organisations already have through Microsoft 365. I also have hands-on experience with SAP, Microsoft Dynamics AX and Business Central, and forecasting systems such as RELEX. If something else would serve you better, I will explain why.

How is confidential data handled?

Access is agreed at the start of each piece of work, and only the data the work needs is used. Wherever possible, work is carried out within your own systems and security policies, and I am happy to sign a non-disclosure agreement. Please do not include confidential customer or employee information in an initial enquiry.

Where do you work?

I am based in Loughton, Essex and work with organisations across Essex, London and the UK, remotely or on site by arrangement.

What size of business do you work with?

The work suits small businesses and larger organisations alike. The problems are often the same; what changes is the scale, the number of people involved and the systems around them.

Describe the problem, not the specification.

A short outline of what is going wrong is enough to start a free, no-obligation conversation.
